Green America (www.greenpamericatoday.org) is a nonprofit, membership organization whose mission is to harness economic power—the strength of consumers, investors, businesses, and the marketplace—to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society.
Green America's Green Business Network is the first and largest association of socially and environmentally responsible businesses in the nation. Working together, we combine social responsibility, environmental sustainability, and social justice in a way that builds each of our businesses, benefits everyone, and helps heal the planet. Our upcoming San Francisco Green Business Conference on Nov. 11-12 will bring together green business leaders to hear visionary speakers, problem-solve, and network.
The Social Media / Promotions Intern will work directly with the Green Business Network Deputy Director, Business Membership Coordinator and Division Assistant on developing our social media outreach, with a focus on Facebook and Twitter. The intern will also build on and execute promotional efforts for our annual San Francisco Green Business Conference (Nov. 11-12) to online information outlets. This internship is a great opportunity to build your knowledge and skills in outreach to the expanding green world online, while becoming an integral part of the team producing this green business leadership event.
We are located in Washington, D.C., but the internship can be conducted remotely on a flexible schedule.
Duties
- Help maintain and build up our presence on online networking sites, primarily Facebook and Twitter. Strategize with staff and investigate best practices to improve our participation in social media.
- Communicate with relevant bloggers and event listing sites to distribute conference promotional information across a wide range of online locations, both through tracking work on our existing database and through original research. Explore creative and effective avenues to promote the conference.
- Build relationships through social media with the online communications staff at allied organizations and green businesses that connect to our work. Assist in strengthening cross-promotional relationships.
- Monitor information-sharing through social media and identify common threads of interest to green business owners and consumers to help us hone our educational outreach and resources.
Qualifications
- Completion of at least one year of undergraduate studies desired.
- Must have a passion for social and environmental justice.
- Must be an outgoing, personable, and articulate networker and self-starter.
- Must be comfortable working independently in an unstructured environment where creativity is encouraged.
- Must have excellent communication skills and be comfortable "cold calling" other green online posters to spread word about the conference (this is all online work - no phone calling involved!).
- Must be generally web savvy and love social networking, with specific experience in Facebook and Twitter (personally or professionally). Skype capability a plus.
- Must have an interest in marketing / promotions / public relations. Creative ideas in these areas welcome.
