Green America meets with the Obama Transition Team


Green America’s Executive Director, Alisa Gravitz, met with the Obama Transition Team to discuss America’s transition to a sustainable economy. We presented a policy paper outlining the top priorities the administration should focus on: Green energy and green jobs, clean energy victory bonds, green business expansion fund, health care reform and transformational economic system thinking. Green America looks forward to having an ally in the White House.

On January 1, Co-op America became Green America. New name, same mission – same great programs and publications.

With this name change, our commitment is to set the standard for green, so that as our country goes green, it is the deep, holistic green that means economic and social justice, community and environmental health. CPSC Grants One Year Stay of Testing and Certification Requirements for Certain Products!

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission voted unanimously (2-0) to issue a one year stay of enforcement for certain testing and certification requirements for manufacturers and importers of regulated products, including products intended for children 12 years old and younger.

Green Festival donates 3 tons of food

Green Festival donated a record amount of food to the San Francisco Food Bank. During a time when food banks are suffering from lack of donations, 6,000 pounds of food were delivered from the weekend donations at the San Francisco Green Festival. With the participation of the local community, Green Festival was able to give back to the city that gave the event its start.

Green America is working with Barnes and Noble to highlight magazines using recycled paper.  These magazines and the National Green Pages™ are in 240 stores in highly visible promotional racks. The promotion gives ten magazines with an environmental commitment greater product placement during these challenging times. Green America’s Better Paper Project has participated in similar promotions in other retail outlets such as Hastings Entertainment and Universal News.

Dynergy stops five coal plants

Coal-fired energy giant Dynergy has pulled construction of five new coal plants. Thanks to all that joined Green America’s letter-writing campaign and sent messages to Dynergy that “coal is not clean, and renewable energy is our future.” According to Dynergy they have stopped plans to build in Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Michigan and Nevada.
