Mayor Daley & Governor Quinn Kick-off Green Festival

Huge crowds and great press filled the weekend at the Chicago Green Festival. Mayor Richard M. Daley and Governor Pat Quinn, with GBN Director Denise Hamler, opened the festival and toured the event to see all the green innovations from our Green Business Network Members. Press coverage included 36 television news features which brought large crowds.

Illinois Governor Quinn signed legislation at the festival that mandates energy savings of state buildings (Senate Bill 3429). "Illinois is committed to being a leader in the green movement," said Governor Quinn. "This bill is a first step in creating standards for energy efficiency at existing state buildings and further addresses the state's green goals."

Chicago Mayor Daley, in his third appearance at Green Festival, toured the floor with Denise Hamler. Mayor Daley remarked how impressed he was with the growth of green business enterprises in the city and was looking for more technology innovations to add to the cities greening initiatives.

Oil Spill Call for Action

Green America is calling on members to seize the opportunity to really push for cleaner energy, starting with a demand to end offshore drilling now. Contact elected officials and the Obama White House to demand a real change in focus for U.S. energy policy. And do your part—cut the energy use of your business by 50% in the next five years.

We also need to get our workplaces, schools, communities, and governments to cut their fossil fuel use dramatically. And we need to put more pressure on utility companies to stop burning coal and to scale up energy efficiency and renewables.

Victory for Financial Reform

It was a busy week in Washington DC which started with a 'showdown on K Street' and ended with a victory on Capitol Hill.

Green America staffers Todd Larsen and Fran Teplitz particiated in a large demonstation that called for an end to "big bank greed" and legislative changes to the U.S. financial system that would protect consumers and small businesses. The demonstration brought together labor, consumer, investor and community organizations demanding financial reform.

Victory came when the Senate passed the bill, Restoring American Financial Stability Act of 2010, by a vote of 59-39.

"Green America commends the Senators who sought to strengthen the bill through strong measures both to prevent the continuation of irresponsible and abusive conduct by the big banks and to increase transpency on Wall Street," stated Alisa Gravitz, Green America Executive Director. "We are so proud of the role that the Green Business Network members played in signing the Business Leaders' Letter in support of the new Consumer Financial Protection Agency, which helped to pass the bill."

"We urge the House and Senate to continue to strengthen the financial reform package to prevent another financial collapse triggered by Wall Street greed and the absence of protections for consumers and small business."

Support Stronger Regulation of Toxic Chemicals

The federal law designed to ensure the safety of chemicals used in U.S. consumer products hasn't changed in 34 years. The new Safe Chemicals Act seeks to bring stronger regulation of toxic chemicals. Many Green Business Network members have gone on record as supporters of this law.

Ask Congress for the Safe Chemicals Act »

If you own stock, use your shareholder power to demand accountability. This past April, 20 percent of the Coca-Cola Company’s shareholders demanded that the company report on its use of bisphenol-A, a chemical suspected of links to reproductive damage and cancer.

On June 3, join Green America and the American Sustainable Business Council for the Business-NGO Forum on Safer Chemical Policies. The forum will bring together business leaders and NGOs to discuss the proposed legislation to overhaul the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976.
