Greenwashing Strikes Again
Natural Marketing Institute’s
new LOHAS research proves that corporate sustainability messaging may not be as effective as its perpetrators anticipate. In a market overwhelmed by green claims, the study highlights that “to stand out in this sea of green a new level of sophistication and transparency will be required.” The report asserts that consumers are inundated by countless sustainability claims, and are often unable to distinguish legitimate efforts from shallow claims, however, skepticism is mounting. The conscious consumer is increasingly looking for credible, third-party proof of the claims companies make. It further recommends that to legitimize the green marketplace companies must undergo a rigorous process to ensure accountability and authenticity.
(Editor's Note: This example shows how important the Green America’s Green Business Network™'s screening and approval process and Seal of Approval is to the future growth of the green marketplace.)
