Economic action for a just and sustainable planet

Dear Co-op America Member,

Happy 2007!  Here at Co-op America we've got an action-packed agenda for the new year.

This year we'll launch our first-ever Midwest Green Festival in Chicago, showing even more people what a vibrant green economy looks like.  We'll publish an issue of our Co-op America Quarterly devoted to economic actions for Africa, from Fair Trade to divestment from Sudan to community investing in South Africa.  And we'll continue with our ongoing economic action campaigns to switch magazines onto recycled paper, grow the market for Fair Trade products, and bring solar energy to scale.

However, as Al Gore says, little else matters if we fail to implement immediate big-picture solutions to the climate crisis, which is why our 2007 agenda will be filled with high profile work on climate action – and we hope you'll join in all of our climate campaigns!

We'll make it easy for you through this e-newsletter – so open each one, and help take economic action on the climate crisis at the speed and scale necessary to address the problem. And use our information and tools to take action in your home, workplace and community. Our recent Co-op America Quarterly discussed climate solutions in detail for the key sectors of the economy, and our updated ClimateAction.org gives you tools for taking climate action in your own life – from finding climate-friendly investments to reducing your carbon footprint.

Stay tuned to your e-newsletter for climate actions throughout 2007.

Here's to a climate-friendly 2007,

Action

Action: Stop TXU Coal Plants in Texas

TXU, one of the largest coal companies in the country, recently announced plans for 11 new coal-fired power plants in Texas. Together, these power plants will emit as much polluting carbon dioxide as the entire country of Denmark – and will completely negate the carbon savings triggered by recent climate legislation in California.

Co-op America recently asked our members in Texas to take climate action with us tell TXU they don't want their electricity to come from dirty coal.  TXU shareholders have already taken exception to TXU's plans as well, filing three new climate resolutions with TXU in December to be considered at the company's spring meeting.

TXU has told shareholders that it will build even more coal plants in Virginia and Pennsylvania after building in Texas.  If you live in one of these states, and you haven't already signed onto our TXU action, please do so today.  No matter where you live, please forward this e-mail to your friends in the affected states, so we can join together to send a resounding "no" to TXU on building coal plants.
