Green America - Action, News and Resources

Dear Green America member,

Lucky me, I was in California working on our solar and Green Festival programs during the recent “Snowmageddon” in Green America’s hometown of Washington, DC. I heard the stories of the sledding and snowball fights, sidewalk-shoveling and power-outages from all of my colleagues when I returned.

I also heard a lot of talk – in both California and back in DC – from climate deniers taking advantage of the appearance of sudden wintry weather to make the phony claim that climate change isn’t real. Maybe you’ve heard some of this too?

Unfortunately, unlike the snow, which is melting away, some of the climate-deniers’ spin seems like it might stick. We can’t let misinformation torpedo strong climate legislation in Congress this year. Check out our latest editorial for some talking points to help you counter the spin, plus a call-in action to Congress sponsored by our allies at 1Sky, and one of our most inspiring green-business interviews ever.

Interview sneak-peek: What do you do when you're doing business in the housing market and you see that market going south? If you’re Ben, Will, and Michael Harroun, you pivot directly into a promising new enterprise, residential wind turbines, and help your housing clients get off of dirty coal, and onto a self-sufficient form of clean energy that will pay for itself!

Here’s to taking action for the climate,

Action: Tell Congress to Protect the
Clean Air Act

sky and ocean

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R, AK) is set to introduce legislation into the Senate to prevent the EPA from enforcing the Clean Air Act and regulating carbon emissions.

Green America is joining with our allies at 1Sky and others for a 72-hour call-in action to Congress, demanding that Senators say “no” to Murkowski’s “Dirty Air Act” and say “yes” to strong climate legislation NOW – during this session of Congress.

The call-in action starts TODAY, March 2, and continues through Thursday, March 4. Please forward this e-mail, post to Facebook and connect all of your networks to this campaign. Let’s flood Congress with the message that we want strong climate legislation now.

News: There's Still a Climate Crisis,
Even if it's Snowing

Snowy road with truck and American flag

Have you heard friends or relatives asking how climate change can be real if it’s snowing outside? Have you heard climate-denying commentators mocking when climate-change hearings get postponed on Capitol Hill due to winter storms? And have you wondered how to respond?

Our editorial gives you the facts behind the recent mid-Atlantic snowstorms. While the drifting snow might make an attractive visual to represent “cold” in the face of “global warming,” the truth is simple: precipitation is not temperature.

In fact, experts say, if anything, the severity of the recent snowstorms are consistent with a warming planet. A warmer planet evaporates more moisture into the air, and retains more moisture in its atmosphere. This moisture must eventually fall, which means that the recent “snowpocalypses” have been more like a wintertime Katrina than anything – a wake-up call that something is going wrong in our atmosphere.

Read our editorial for more information, including how government climate scientists actually PREDICTED storms just like these. (Then, post our editorial to your blogs, Facebook, etc. We need to counter the climate-deniers’ spin.)

Meet Ben Harroun of Angel Wind Energy

wind turbines
Windspire wind turbines (made in Michigan) installed by Angel Wind Energy at Devon Bank, a community bank in Wheeling, IL.

This month, we profile one of our newest Green Business Network members, Angel Wind Energy. When the housing market tanked in 2008, the Harrouns (the family behind Angel Wind Energy) were in the general construction trade, and saw their business drying up. So, they took action, and made a switch to a more specialized business -- residential wind energy -- before joining our business network last year, in 2009.

We asked Ben Harroun to tell us more about his company's move into wind energy, their sourcing standards for the turbines they install, and the origin of the "angel" in their name.
