Everyday products such as shampoo, deodorant and make-up contain chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and other serious health consequences. Cosmetics manufacturers are allowed to use almost any chemical as an ingredient without government approval; however, some leading companies agree that cosmetics should be made with safe, non-toxic ingredients. Over 600 companies have signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, a pledge to make safe products and the campaign is calling for all cosmetics companies to do the same.

Procter & Gamble has teamed up with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to provide tetanus vaccines for mothers and children in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The vaccines are funded through sales of Pampers Diapers, a product of Procter and Gamble. The partnership has provided more than 7 million vaccines and plans to reach 10 million from sales of Pampers in the U.K alone. While receiving vaccines is beneficial to the health and well-being of Congolese citizens, less than 30 percent of whom have access to health centers, the company's motives for funding these vaccines is not entirely altruistic. Since the program's beginning, sales of Pampers have drastically increased and positive perceptions of the brand have gone up due to their association with such a highly respected charity.

Procter & Gamble was among the corporations criticized by Greenpeace for working to weaken European laws governing harmful chemicals in household products. The EU's 2003 draft legislation would have imposed strict safety standards, requiring companies such as P&G to disclose and reduce the use of harmful ingredients in its consumer products. Greenpeace states that as a result of industry intimidation and intense lobbying, safety regulations were significantly watered down, putting citizens at greater risk of exposure to toxic chemicals from everyday products.

Vice President Dick Cheney was a member of Procter and Gamble's board of Directors from 1993 through the 2000 presidential election. Controversy arose when there was a sex quiz for younger teens on P&G's newly launched Web site, BeingGirl. The quiz was dropped after the Republican National Convention in 2000 when Cheney's ties to the company were made known.

Cheney also served on the company's public policy, audit, and compensation committees. As a member of the Board, Cheney was eligible to receive a compensation of $55,000 per year, provided he attended 75% of the meetings, as well as stock and stock options. According to spokesperson Linda Ulrey, Cheney took part in the company's corporate charitable gifts program.

Friends of the Earth issued a report detailing the risks of nanomaterials found in cosmetics, sunscreens, and personal care products. The study demonstrates how a variety of nanoparticles can be toxic to human tissue and skin cultures. Numerous prominent cosmetic companies, such as Proctor & Gamble, L'Oreal, and Estee Lauder, continue to sell products containing nano-scale ingredients. Friends of the Earth is calling for a moratorium on further commercial release of such products, a withdrawal of those currently on the market until further studies have been completed, and regulations put into place for the general public, workers manufacturing such products, and environment.

In August 2005 California Attorney General Bill Lockyer filed suit against nine producers of potato chips and french fries concerning toxic contents in their popular foods. Lockyer sought a court order requiring the companies to warn consumers that some of their food products are made with acrylamide, a chemical identified by the state as a human carcinogen. California law (Proposition 65) states that companies are required to warn their consumers about products that contain chemicals which cause cancer or birth defects. Plaintiffs in the case include McDonald's, Burger King, KFC, Frito Lay, H.J. Heinz, Procter & Gamble and Wendy's.

As of May 2007, Procter and Gamble has not reached a settlement.

Procter & Gamble was accused of illegally selling its genetically engineered Pringles Potato Chips in the Indian Market. A test conducted by an independent lab, Hong Kong DNA, affirmed that the chips, which were manufactured and imported from the U.S., contained Monsanto's GE Roundup Ready crops. Indian law demands that prior approval be granted by the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee to companies selling engineered products. Neither Procter & Gamble or Monsanto had applied for the permit.

According to Global Labor Strategies (GLS), a nonprofit resource center for social movements, Procter & Gamble is one of the corporations “acting through business organizations like the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and the US-China Business Council,” to lobby against China’s Draft Labor Contract Law. This new law proposed by the Chinese government aims to secure minimal labor standards for workers, such as enforceable labor contracts, severance pay regulations and negotiating power over workplace procedures and policies. A GLS report entitled: “Behind the Great Wall of China: U.S. Corporations Opposing New Rights for Chinese Workers,” notes that while the law will not eliminate labor problems in China, it is an important step in improving a system where poverty wages, lack of health and safety protections, and the absence of any legal contracts are common for Chinese workers. Organizations representing US companies have threatened to withdraw business from China if such a law is passed. Other companies lobbying agains the law include Google, Wal-Mart, Nike and General Electric.

According to China Labour Watch, employees classified as "temporary workers" in the Guangzhou Procter & Gamble factory are forced to work 12 hour shifts six days a week, with just four days off per month. The P&G facility does not permit paid holiday for weddings or funerals. The workers in question do not receive any "social insurance," which refers to the health, unemployment and pension insurance guaranteed under Chinese law. After working a 12 hour shift workers are forced to go to a separate distribution center to perform additional labor. Noncompliance will result in suspension. Chinese law mandates that workers are to have the benefits of social insurance and forced overtime is strictly forbidden.

Procter & Gamble rated the highest score--49--on Oxfam's rating of the 4 largest coffee roasters in 2003. According to Oxfam, "Procter & Gamble has been the clear leader in paying coffee farmers a decent price because it agreed earlier this year to buy small amounts of Fair Trade Certified and Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee." However, Oxfam also points out that the company has few guidelines on buying Fair Trade coffee and has been lax in working within the industry to address the coffee crisis.

Companies were graded on the price they paid to farmers (70 percent), support for policy alternatives (10 percent), financial contributions (10 percent) and leadership in industry-wide initiatiives (10 percent). Other companies graded are Kraft, Nestle and Sara Lee.

Procter & Gamble, the maker of Folger's coffee and part of the coffee roaster oligopoly, was named one of the "10 Worst Corporations of 2002" by the Multinational Monitor for for failing to take action to address plummeting coffee bean prices. Low prices have pushed tens of thousands of farmers in Central America, Ethiopia, Uganda and elsewhere to the edge of poverty, or destroyed their means of livelihood altogether.

PETA is calling for a boycott of Iams pet food (a P&G subsidiary) after an undercover investigator spent 9 months documenting the treatment of animals tested in Iams-contacted laboratories. According to PETA , the investigator documented inhumane treatment of laboratory animals including dogs being dumped on cold concrete flooring after having huge chunks of muscle cut out of their thighs; dogs and cats going stir-crazy from confinement; dogs and cats in windowless, dungeon-like buildings; sticking tubes down dogs’ throats to force them to ingest vegetable oil; and dogs being surgically debarked. PETA is calling on Iams to end its lab testing immediately and rely on non-animal laboratory analysis, in-home testing with dogs and cats whose humane companions have volunteered them for such tests, and cooperative arrangements with shelters and veterinary clinics.
