Try to rely as little on the grid as you can by using energy-efficient and alternative energy technologies.

Get involved in a “green tags” program to offset your power usage by adding green energy to the country’s power grid. Many green tag programs support existing renewable energy facilities; others, like the NativeEnergy WindBuildersSM program, finance the construction of new facilities

Use recycled and rechargeable batteries. Disposable batteries contain toxic chemicals, and manufacturing them takes about 50 times as much energy as the batteries produce.

Replace old appliances when needed with energy-efficient models.

Use compact fluorescent light bulbs, which last longer and use far less energy than incandescents.

Turn your refrigerator up to 37°–40°F, and turn the freezer to 5°F.

Use cold water in your washing machine when possible. As much as 90 percent of the energy used to wash clothes goes to heating water.
